| Because she comes from wealth, Cornelia Robertson struggles with her position of power among the hospital staff, as Edwards learns the hospital does not treat black people. He then creates a makeshift clinic in the hospital's basement to treat those turned away. Barrow has difficulties making the hospital more presentable and must cut costs, which causes an electrical short that sets a patient on fire and electrocutes a nurse. However, it is revealed that Barrow is pocketing hospital funds to try and pay on a loan to a mobster. Meanwhile, Thackery demands cadavers for experiments, and Drs. Chickering and Gallinger break into a library to study some of Edwards' French medical journals.Abigail Alford (Jennifer Ferrin), a former lover of Thackery's, arrives at the hospital to ask him to operate on her nose, which has been ravaged by syphilis from her promiscuous husband. Edwards must leave mid-surgery in the basement to pilfer the hospital for thread. He interrupts Thackery's surgery to learn his expertise will be needed on an aorta operation the next morning. After a long day, Edwards gets into a drunken fight with a bar patron. Meanwhile, Barrow sells a cadaver for 75 dollars, and spends the money at a whorehouse.
