The series title refers to the opinion of burn notices of the intelligence agencies to discredit or announce the dismissal of agents or sources who are believed to have become unreliable. When the spies are burned, their connection with an espionage organization is complete, leaving no access to money or influence. According to the narration of the opening credits, the spy is burned with no history of previous work, no money, no support network - in essence, no identity. The TV series uses the first person narrative (including frequent voiceover providing exposure) in terms of covert operations agent Michael Westen, played by Jeffrey Donovan. The voiceover commentary is in the form of advice for budding officers, as if it was a film training or guidance.
